The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is an independent, non-profit, standards-setting authority for medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements that are manufactured, distributed and consumed worldwide. Since its founding in 1820, USP has aimed to improve public health through standards and related programs that help ensure the identity, strength, quality and purity of medicines. USP’s standards have been used in more than 140 countries.

Globally, USP fosters the sustainable development of regulatory systems, ensuring readiness to apply public standards that protect communities from poor quality medicines. Through the provision of technical assistance and training, USP’s Global Public Health (GPH) team works with regulatory authorities, ministries, medicines quality control laboratories, and pharmaceutical manufacturers globally.

USP supports regulatory authorities in the areas of systems development, post-marketing surveillance, laboratory quality management systems leading to World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification and/or International Organization for Standardization accreditation, as well as training in quality assurance and quality control services. USP also provides technical assistance to manufacturers through targeted trainings, gap analysis, and mock audits related to dossier preparation and good manufacturing practices. In addition, the organization guides manufacturers towards regulatory compliance by helping them develop effective corrective and preventative action plans in preparation for WHO prequalification and/or other stringent submissions. All of these efforts seek to increase the availability of essential medicines, while reducing the effects of falsified, substandard, and/or counterfeit medicines. GPH has provided technical assistance and training activities in more than 70 countries.
